Veterans Day 2009...
This posting will only be one of a gazillion posts honoring Vets on Veteran's today. Being a vet, today, I welcome the words, "Thank you for your Service." For me and others in my era, it was not always that way.
Having fought in an unpopular war that had our Country divided, we were looked down upon, spat upon, ridiculed, and verbally abused. "War monger!" "Baby killer!" were the welcome cries for many veterans of my era. Rarely was heard, "Thank you for your Service."
Sticks and stones can break your bones but words can really hurt you. Even though these cut through to the very fabric of my soul, I held my head high. In my heart of hearts, I knew that I served my Country well. Like soothing save on a terrible wound, I would have welcomed the words, "Thank you for your Service".
I was Honored to be able to give these folks and generations to come the freedoms that they have and take for granted.
Pride that so many others along with me did what so many chose not to do. We put it all on the line for our Country. Many, paid the ultimate sacrifice.
America and Americans are not perfect. Current personnel and Veterans alike take an oath to serve and defend this Nation with their most precious possession - their lives. Maybe that is why they call it "The Service." Think about it! Would YOU be willing to do this? Take a moment and thank a vet. Tell them from your heart of hearts, "Thank you for your Service."

Please do not thank me. This is not what this post is about. It is about others. Thank them for their hard work and sacrifice...
Michael - thank you for your service. I mean it. And I'll thank as many other veterans as I can!
Michael, A great post! I come from the same era and do thank you for your service. We truly owe our lives and our way of life to ALL the brave men and women that serve and have served our country.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE.
You may not have been thanked then, but thankfully attitudes toward service have changed a great deal since you came home... as well they should have. Like many others you served your country well... and she owes you all a heartfelt thank you.
Hi Michael,
Thank you for your service to ensure my freedom Michael. I do mean these words and will be thanking many other veterans including my wonderful husband. He had a bad dream service related early this morning. He is the only one left from his core group. They have all been gone a long time.
Michael, many years have passed since that confusing time in our country's history. And, although I was too young at the time to know the impact it had on our great nation, I know now.
And all I can say is, "Thank you for your service."
Michael, your post has brought to mind all my friends that served this country in the same war. Most of them are long gone, lost too early after coming home. The horrors they endured both during their service time and the horrors they endured upon returning home to an ungrateful and cruel setting was too much to bear and their choices of dealing with their struggles became their un-doing.
I do appreciate the sacrifices all who served our country have made, and thank everyone. And thank you for this post, you stirred some memories of a time forgotten.
Hi Michael:
To you and all who have served and are serving our country...
THANK YOU!
Michael,
There are many that have served and many that have paid the ultimate sacrifice. That sacrifice has affected their families for many lifetimes. So not only to those that have served but to the families of those that have died in service to our country I say Thank you as well.
Michael I remember how you guys were treated when you returned and I pray that no service member ever have to endure what you guys were put through. Thank you for your service.
Thank you.
Gosh Michael I thought you were much younger than me! :-)
Thanks for your post & service. You got me crying just remembering again.
I've just reblogged.
Have a great week!
Michael - If nothing else has changed in the last 40 years, it's the fact that we now respect our troops.
I believe that you might be able to attribute some of that to cable news. When we only had the big three, they were all anti-war everything. Now we at least get a chance to get a different opinion.
By they way congrates on 500,000 points. it passed right by.
Michael, That must be why your posts always reveal a touch of humanity. Thank you for serving us. I am glad you made it through...and I am sorry for those that did not, or those that have come back wounded for life. It's a tough job y'all take on.
