Michael's View: A Picture or a Photograph...

A Picture or a Photograph...

A Picture or a Photograph...

...what is the difference? Or is there? Anyone who reads my blogs knows that photography is my passion. Given an interesting subject, I can easily get into my right mind and start wandering behind the pixels.
I marvel at an artist's abilities to put images on canvas. There is a special place in their mind where time and form intertwine. Form becomes everything and time just is.
Granted. A massive field of flowers is something that most folks would want to take a picture of. Only someone in their "right mind" would spend an hour looking for the right subject to photograph...

Lighting...the light of a certain time of a day, in a certain season and the long shadows that you only get like how often an eclipse happens. Lighting just one element and then the subject, the focus behind if soft and to what degree, etc When I developed images on different paper stock, shot the images with different films, including black and white, all the variables make for a unique image, photo, picture. That's why when a recent AR blog says pictures should be shared on the area, the real estate to help the area I have to say the guy or gal that put the effort in to your blog, those images, should not just have other agents right click and steal them. Make, capture, collect your own! Great post.

Photography like painting is art. Some folks are blessed with that special ability to see the world a little bit differently. We are lucky they can share their view with us. Thanks for sharing.

I agree with James in that photography and painting are forms of art.....Thanks for sharing your art with those of us that aren't so blessed!

...and to be able to captivate the artist-photographer, the subject must have a particular allure visible at a moment...invisible if one is not in that moment...and so the artist-photographer can enter a practice that delights and inspires....and then can reach out to touch others...as do YOU

I think the artist has the ability to slow down.  You cannot "SEE" if you move too fast.

Michael - I think you answered your own question nicely; we picture something in our minds and when we find what looks right, we photograph it. Sunflowers always bring a smile.

I have seen many of your pictures and am know wondering if you have ever had a show or displayed your works anywhere.

If not you should , you have a fresh perspective

Michael, sunflowers were the Kansas state flower, and they grew wild all over the neighborhood where I grew up.  The people next door (to my father's chagrin) let their whole back yard go to the sunflowers, and now I wish I could recapture the photo op!

Hi Michael, Well done! An interesting topic and I suppose many answers exist out there, mostly based on one's experience or lack thereof. Interesting the difference of picture to photo with the change from observer to artist/creator/presenter.

Hi Michael - Though it's not all black and white (ha ha), a photograph usually has some thought and intent put into it. Form, perspective, composition, light/shadow/color all go into the artistic side, and then it's a matter of having the skill to accurately capture the vision.

Some people take photography to an art form.  For myself, I've found myself lost behind the lens and wondering how I got to certain places while trying to take the perfect photo.

Hi Michael!  You truly do have a talent for photography and I guess that it does take a passion for the 'artwork' behind the lens to be as successful as you are at it.

I love the right mind comment--I'm left handed and always proclaim to be in my 'right mind!'  LOL

Enjoy your Memorial Day...

That sunflower photo is amazing! I actually am an artist (3 years of lessons... watercolor, pen and ink-stippling and hatching, pastels, and general sketching) so obviously I graviate toward photos as well. Unfortunately, I don't have the equipment necessary to take REALLY good photos! I'm just waiting for a few good sales. I impatiently wait for the day I have a kick-butt zoom lens. Then, look out world! =D

These could be photographs or paintings, but they are definitely works of art.  That is the quality that distinguishes a great photographer from a mediocre one.
