Michael's View: The Hidden Danger in Your Home

The Hidden Danger in Your Home

The Hidden Danger in Your Home

If your home was built after 1990 to present date, there may be a safety hazard in your home which has the potential to injure you or your loved ones.

No, it is not Radon or the chemicals stored under your kitchen sink or closet where you keep your cleaning supplies. The culprit is what may be HOLDING up your cabinets - drywall screws.

Drywall Screw

I subscribe to several trade publications and there have been a few articles about this hidden danger which just recently have begun to surface. There are several instances where cabinets have fallen off the walls injuring people - some of them severely. These instances have been traced back to where the cabinet installer used drywall screws to affix the cabinets to the walls.

The combined weight of the cabinets, dishes, canned goods and the like can accumulate rapidly and over stress the fasteners causing the heads to pop off or the shank to break. The fix is simple - replace the screw with a good grade wood screw.

Protect yourself and your loved ones, take a few minutes to check your cabinets. Look inside your cabinets, if the screws have black or grey heads, the screws most likely are drywall screws.

WOW, I know that I never thought about that. That is a very valid point.

This is a great posting - I have never even thought about this - yet I have never heard of anybody getting hurt with this either.  I did have a friend a couple of months ago that one of his cabinets just fell down in the middle of the night - I am going to email him this posting.

Thanks
